How Homeopathy works?
Homeopathic remedies are based upon the "Law of Similars." This law states that “a medicine which produces a set of symptoms in a healthy person will cure the same set of symptoms in a diseased body.” Each homeopathic remedy has carefully been tested on various healthy people. Thus the symptoms produced in these people are identified. Homeopathic remedies are comprised of natural medicines. They constitute herbs, minerals or other natural substances. They are prepared by a special process known as Potentization. It is a step by step dilution and succussion (shaking) which gives them necessary potency thus making them capable of affecting your health in a much deeper way.
The Law of Similars and Potentization
The two important ideas on which the science of homeopathy is based are the Law of Similars and Potentization. As stated before, the Law of Similars states that since exposure to a substance cause specific symptoms to show up in a healthy person it can stimulate the body’s curative powers to overcome similar symptoms during illness.
It is very much known that onion vapor produces the symptoms of watery eyes, a runny nose, sneezing, coughing and throat irritation. The homeopathic remedy, Allium cepa, made of potentized red onion helps the body overcome a cold or allergy attack that produce similar symptoms. Though the actual symptoms of the illness are not caused by exposure to an onion, yet the remedy made from the onion helps the body overcome these symptoms. It is because they are are similar.
Potentization is very important since the repeated process of dilution and succussion brings about an energetic change that gives the substance a deep curative effect. Repeated dilution removes all chances of chemical toxicity. It thus allows the homeopathic use of many substances that would otherwise be unsafe to be taken as a medicine.
The safety and non-toxicity of homeopathic remedies is reassuring. In spite of this, they still must be chosen carefully on the basis of specific information. They should correctly be used or else may either affect the symptoms superficially or have no effect at all. Homeopathic remedies are not selected merely to treat an isolated symptom or a named disease. For the desired cure they must be chosen to match the way an individual’s system expresses its unique response to the current stress and illness. Even within the same diagnosis, different people respond to different remedies.
The cure by similars actually predates homeopathy by several centuries. Hippocrates records the use of this approach to healing from the Oracle of Delphi, from Indian medical texts as much as 4,000 years old and from ancient Chinese medical texts. Celsus, a physician of the Greek classical period and Theophrastus, a Swiss physician of the 16th century received acknowledgment for their effectiveness too. |
